Did you know…?
- Across all industry, on average, soft tissue injuries account for 30 to 40% of all workers comp claims…
- On average, soft tissue injuries account for 30 to 40% of all workers comp costs…
- Not counting vacation and personal leave, back pain is second only to the common cold as the main reason employees take time off from work…
- More medication is sold for back pain than any other ailment with the single exception of the headache.
So, let’s see if we understand what you’re up against….You say you have a “safe lifting class” once a year and it doesn’t work because nothing seems to change and people keep hurting their backs or knees or shoulders. So, you’ve given up and decided to just pay the freight and hope for better employees, right? Well, that once-a-year training class in lifting square boxes is like trying to heal bullet wounds with band aids. It will never work. You gotta go deeper...you gotta look at the JOB!
Soft tissue injuries are preventable
WE CAN SHOW YOU HOW
Overview
Our Comprehensive Soft Tissue Injury Prevention is unique in its concept and its application. Our program consists of five (5) separate phases.
In response to numerous client requests and inquiries, Specialty Safety Services, Inc. and Ergonomics, Inc. have formed a strategic alliance to meet the far reaching need that industry has for assistance in controlling soft tissue injuries. We can help your managers and supervisors take the plunge into turning the corner on industry’s biggest safety and health challenge—How do we prevent back injuries and other soft tissue strains and sprains in the workplace?
How it works:
- Phase 1:
We meet with you and review your loss history. You choose the jobsites you want us to evaluate - based on your past losses and current trends in soft tissue injuries. - Phase 2:
Next, we engage your employees and supervisors in a Discovery process. We begin with an open discussion with your employees to understand how their work is performed. Then we use digital still and video photography to document work procedures. We focus on the Big 3:- Body Mechanics
- Ergonomics, and
- Safe Lifting
- Phase 3:
Training is presented in power point using a “core” format that emphasizes Body Mechanics, Ergonomics, and Safe Lifting. The training continues with the site specific still photos and video clips from Phase 1 Injury Analysis, and Phase 2 Discovery.
The jobsite stills and video have a powerful impact on the employees. Because the workplace is brought into the classroom. By “showcasing” the worksite and their own safety challenges, your employees experience an emotional buy-in to the training program. Without this emotional buy-in there may be little hope to encourage employees to take responsibility for their own behavior. - Phase 4:
The Discovery or Training phases may reveal one or more tasks where “fix” may range from the difficult to the seemingly impossible. We will hold Crew Workshops and delve deeper into alternative recommendations to find solutions to these injury prevention challenges. Solutions may range from tool redesign to process improvement. - Phase 5:
Phase 5 Retraining will focus on changes recommended from the crew workshops. This training will be for special target crews where controlled application of new procedures, processes or tool design has been agreed on for experimentation and final implementation.
We recognize that not all tasks, tools or processes can be changed or retooled to eliminate all potential for injury. However, we guarantee we can take those jobs and render them less hazardous and less likely to cause serious injury.

Testimonials
“Years ago, using 35mm slides for presentations, Gordon Coffey developed a reputation as a lively speaker. I recently had the privilege to participate in his “Back, Again!” training program for The City of Seattle. Using site-specific video clips and digital photos of individual workers of all seven departments, Gordon created a very powerful training system that is more dynamic than ever.
Gordon’s ability to make his training projects “custom fit” an organization, has dearly put him in the forefront for making sure that employees stay healthy and go home safe each day. I’m sure that you will want him, “back, again, again, and again…”

"Working in construction it’s often hard to find a great program that fits our needs, and Gordon Coffey’s "Back, Again!" has done just that. Gordon helped us to find and format several different programs specifically tailored and site specific to each department of our diverse field crew. Before Gordon, the only option we had for Back injury prevention training was a video of a warehouse worker carrying boxes; now we have a great program that will fit our training and new hire orientation needs for many years to come."
